The Plain Dealer from Cleveland, Ohio (2024)

THE PLAIN DEALER, SUNDAY, JUNE 21, 1981 13-B Graell's big races block nervousness Fast Pass The Tab is his Derby mount By Bob Dolgan Antonio Graell will be riding one of the favored thoroughbreds, Pass The Tab, in the $150,000 Ohio Derby at Thistledown today. But don't expect him 1 to be nervous about it. Thistledown's leading jockey, who will be riding Pass The Tab, has been in too many important races in a 15-year career to get an overdose of butterflies. He has a pair of $75,000 stakes wins plus several $50,000 events. "I won't really be that excited in the Derby," said the 34-year-old Panamanian.

"I'll ride the same as I do every day. But I'll be a little more happy because it's a big race. "It's a big thing because of the money. The money is so good. Anybody would like to ride in it for that." The winning horse in the Derby will earn $90,000.

The jockey's normal share is or $9,000. Graell was asked what he would do with that. "Go to the bank," he said quickly. Graell has never been aboard Pass The Tab, but saw him run in the Kentucky Derby on television, where he finished sixth. "I think he's got a heck of a shot to win here," said Graell.

"He made a big move in Kentucky, then hung a little." Pass The Tab was in third place, only a length off the lead, after a mile of that Run for the Roses. So he should have a fine chance in the Ohio. As for Graell, he just keeps rolling along. He won the riding championship in Thistle's first meeting this year, his 11th crown here. Only Danny Weiler, with 13, has more.

And Graell, though embroiled in a hot battle with rival Tony D'Amico, is on top in this meeting, too. He had a winner yesterday and leads D'Amico by four. "The way I feel I can ride for 30 more years," said Graell. "I feel like I'm 18. Age means nothing.

It's condition that counts." Hagley's Nest whose owners put him in those prestigious races FROM FIRST SPORTS PAGE a good second in the Illinois Derby, which is the same distance as the Ohio. Prince Fortune is my choice for the show spot. It's not that he is so impressive, but the other colts don't overwhelm me. Prince Fortune has run in only two races this year, both allowances, and won one at 1 mile. His earnings are only $12,000, a pittance compared with some of the others.

But I he does have the saving grace of being fresh and he is trained by Johnny Campo. This is Campo's year. He won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with Pleasant Colony. Besides, Prince Fortune will carry only 114 pounds, nine less than most of the top contenders. I could very easily be wrong, but I have to go against the other three horses who competed in the Triple Crown races.

Paristo might very well be the favorite today off his third place finish in the Preakness, but hehasn't won since the Illinois Derby April 18. He was beaten by 26 lengths in his last effort, the Belmont, and has had a gruelling campaign of ten races this year, winning only two. Classic Go Go, who was fourth in the Kentucky Derby, looks like a tired colt too. He finished sixth, 18 lengths back, last Saturday in Chicago. He has won seven of 13 this year, but has a five-race losing streak.

Bare Knuckles ran in both the Belmont and Preakness, but he might be one of those horses THISTLEDOWN RACE TRACK Antonio Graell The 108-pound Graell spends a few minutes in the steam cabinet every day, then goes in for a daily whirlpool bath. On occasion, he takes a shot of vitamin B-12 for strength. Most people don't realize it, but it takes a lot of strength to control a horse running 40 miles an hour. An ordinary mortal would be physically sapped after one race. Many jockeys like to confine themselves to perhaps five or six rides an afternoon, but Graell likes to keep as busy as possible.

Most days he has seven or eight mounts and sometimes he is in every race. As usual, he is leading the Thistledown jockeys with 179 mounts in the meeting, 43 more than his nearest competitor, Heriberto Rivera Jr. "I love riding all the time," said Graell. "It's my bag." just for status. He finished eighth in both and has won only one of nine races and $37,080 this year.

These Triple Crown competitors do have one advantage, however. They had to tote 126 pounds in those races. You never can tell. They might look better with the lighter burdens they will have today. The other three horses in the field all have local connections.

Most impressive of the bunch is Willy Wank, who set a Thistledown track record for a mile and 40 yards two weeks ago. Trouble with Willy Wank is that he has run in much cheaper races. It is a racetrack axiom that a quality horse will always beat a cheap horse, even if the cheap horse has faster clockings. In other words, Willy Wank probably won't be able to do his best when the classier colts look him in the eye. Willy Wank, who has won three of 11 races but only $22,154 this year, will be ridden by Heriberto Rivera a top Thistle jockey.

The same can be said for Wartime Admiral, who will be chauffered by the old Thistle master, Danny Weiler, and Mitey J. Wartime Admiral has won four of seven and Mitey J. has won three of seven, but both are moving way up in class and the heavens will shake if they win. A crowd of about 16,000 is expected for the 47th Ohio Derby Day card, which will have 11 races. The Derby is the tenth race and will go off about 6 p.m.

The winner of the race will get $90,000, with second place worth $30,000, third $15,000, fourth $7,500, fifth $4,500 and sixth $3,000. Sunshine Mary beats a horse Never mind the 103 others!
