What Kind of Ham is Best for Slow Cooking?

  • For best results, choose a fully-cooked, bone-in ham that is uncut. Uncut hams stay much juicier. They are easy to slice.
  • If you choose a spiral-cut ham, wrap it in foil so it stays moist. Or, you can cook it for less time. Keep an eye on it so it doesn't dry out.

Can Diet Soda be Used in Slow Cooker Ham?

Yes you can. Diet Dr Pepper or Diet co*ke (I like the taste of co*ke Zero better) will work well in this recipe.

Can the Ham be Cooked Without Liquid?

Yes, as the ham will produce its own juices. Wrap it in foil for best results. Then simmer the glaze ingredients on the stove with a cornstarch slurry.

Making a Crockpot Ham is Easy!

If you are cooking a spiral cut ham, watch the cook time so it doesn't dry out.
You can wrap it in foil and add the glaze in there, and then cook it. This helps retain moisture as well as slows down the cook time.

Save the Ham Bone!

There are so many recipes you can make with a leftover meaty ham bone. A few favorites are:

Ingredients

  • 6-7poundHam(bone-in or spiral cut)
  • 1cupCoca Cola or Dr. Pepper(regular or diet)
  • 1cupBrown Sugar,packed
  • ¼cupDijon Mustard
  • 1teaspoonCinnamon
  • ¼teaspoonGround Cloves
  • ¼teaspoonGround Ginger

Garnish

  • Fresh Herbsthyme, rosemary, cranberries, oranges

Instructions

  1. Place the ham in the slow cooker.

  2. Combine the cola, brown sugar, mustard, cinnamon, cloves and ginger.

  3. Pour the sauce over the ham.

  4. Set on high for 3 to 4 hours or low for 6 to 8 hours. Don't overcook!

  5. If you want a thicker glaze, add some corn starch mixed with a little water to the drippings and boil it in a small saucepan until thickened. Then pour over the servings.

  6. Place the ham on a serving platter and garnish with herbs, orange slices or cranberries.

Recipe Notes

  • I prefer to use a bone-in ham, but any ham will work.
  • Hams are cooked so they really only need to be heated through. If they overcook they can dry out, so watch carefully.
  • Spoon the glaze over the ham throughout the cooking time.
  • If you want a nice crust, place your ham on a cookie sheet and set under a 500° broiler for 5 minutes. Watch carefully!

Storage

  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days.
  • You may divide the leftovers into separate containers and freeze for up to 3 months.

Calories are approximate for a 3-ounce serving.

I’ve made this ham and my family loves it. Sometimes I switch out pineapple juice for the pop.
