See how this will impact traffic for late-night drivers in Lancaster County.

ROAD WORK HERE IN THE SUSQUEHANNA VALLEY TO TELL YOU ABOUT HAPPENING TODAY IN LANCASTER COUNTY. AND IT COULD CAUSE SOME MORE TRAFFIC CONSTRICTIONS IF YOU’RE GOING TO BE HEADING IN THAT WAY. AND THE DRIVERS IN THIS SPOT, THEY’RE USED TO SOME BACKUPS. WE’RE TALKING ABOUT THE 3222 CONSTRUCTION PROJECT. IT’S STARTING A NEW PHASE, AND THAT’S WHERE WE FIND NEWS EIGHT’S JAKE REYES. HE IS LIVE AT THAT SCENE WITH WHAT WE CAN EXPECT. JAKE, GOOD MORNING. HEY, MATT AND CAITLIN, GOOD MORNING. WELL, IT’S ALREADY BEEN OVER A WEEK SINCE THE INTERCHANGE WAS SHUT DOWN AS CREWS WERE WORKING ON THE BRIDGE THAT YOU CAN SEE OVER MY SHOULDER BEHIND ME. AND NOW THE NEXT PHASE OF THIS PROJECT CONTINUES. CREWS WILL BE REPAIRING THE EASTBOUND ROUTE 30 RAMP TO NORTHBOUND ROUTE 222. AND BECAUSE OF THIS, THE RAMP WILL BE CLOSED FROM 9 P.M. TO 6 A.M. TOMORROW. WHILE CREWS ARE MILLING AND REPAVING THE ROAD. AND PENNDOT IS TELLING ME THAT THIS OVERNIGHT WORK SHOULDN’T CAUSE TOO MUCH OF A TRAFFIC BACKUP. BUT THE DETOUR WILL BE IN PLACE. SO LISTEN CLOSELY FOR THESE DIRECTIONS. DRIVERS SHOULD CONTINUE EAST TO THE ROUTE 23 EAST NEW HOLLAND AVENUE PIKE EXIT. THEN THEY SHOULD TURN LEFT AT THE TOP OF THE RAMP, TURN LEFT TO WESTBOUND ROUTE 30, THEN EXIT ONTO THE RAMP TO NORTHBOUND ROUTE 222. AND IF YOU MISSED THAT, I KNOW THAT’S A LOT. I HAVE THOSE DIRECTIONS ON MY FACEBOOK PAGE, SO YOU CAN GO AND LOOK AT THAT RIGHT NOW. AND PENNDOT SAYS THIS IS ALL PART OF A PROJECT TO WIDEN THE ROADS ON THE INTERCHANGE AND IMPROVE TRAFFIC SAFETY. THIS IS SET TO BE COMPLETED IN 2027. SO THEY SAY IT’S IMPORTANT THAT THEY CONTINUE THESE PHASES QUICKLY. EVERYTHING THAT WE CAN DO TO TO KEEP KEEP IT ON TRACK IS IMPORTANT, YOU KNOW, SO DELAYS YOU KNOW, MIGHT BE INSIGNIFICANT BY IN IN OF THEMSELVES. BUT YEAH THOSE UP AND UM, YOU KNOW YOU COULD SET THE PROJECT BACK. AND BECAUSE THIS IS LATE NIGHT WORK, DROWSY DRIVING DOES BECOME MORE OF A CONCERN. SO PENNDOT JUST WANTS TO REMIND DRIVERS THAT IF YOU’RE USING THAT DETOUR TONIGHT TO STAY ALERT FOR THOSE WORK ZONES. NOW, AGAIN, THIS ISN’T A LONG TERM PROJECT, SO KEEP UP WITH WGAL TRAFFIC AS WE CONTINUE TO KEEP AN EYE OUT ON THESE TRAFFIC CONDITIONS. REPORTING LI

According to PennDOT, the work couldn't be done during the demolition of the southbound Route 222 bridge to eastbound Route 30 because crews needed to use the ramp to access the bridge.

The department said although the work should not cause much of a traffic backlog, there will be a detour in place:

  • Drivers should continue east to the Route 23 East/New Holland Avenue/Pike Exit.
  • They should then turn left at the top of the ramp, turn left to westbound Route 30, then exit onto the ramp to northbound Route 222.

The work is part of a three-year project to improve the Route 30/222 interchange. PennDOT will add more lanes, ramps and other additions to improve the flow of traffic.

PennDOT spokesperson Dave Thompson said the area currently has issues with traffic backups, which can be a concern for safety.

"When traffic is backed up on the main line, people are not expecting to bump into that," Thompson said. "In stopped traffic. That's definitely a safety issue. When things open up, that would increase safety as traffic moves more efficiently through there."

The interchange improvement project is set to be completed in 2027. Keep up with WGAL Traffic for continued coverage on the construction of the project.
