Yes. Due to the cream cheese in these truffles, they should remain refrigerated.

Oreo Truffle Variations

Truthfully, these Oreo truffles can be made using any flavor of Oreos. Birthday cake, golden, blueberry, lemon, or mint chocolate.

You can also dip them in whatever type of chocolate you have including, milk, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate.

Decorating can also be up to you! You can use a melted chocolate drizzle, crumbled Oreos, or festive sprinkles.

Chocolate Melting and Dipping Tips

  • Add the little bit of oil or shortening when melting the chocolate. This will help it to melt more smoothly and distribute more evenly when dipping the balls into the chocolate.
  • If your chocolate is too thick, add another ¼ teaspoon of oil to thin it out.
  • Use a fork or candy dipping tool to dip your Oreo truffles. Let the truffle sit on top like a spoon. Slowly push the truffle off with a toothpick after it's been dipped.
  • If your Oreo balls are falling apart, either the chocolate is too hot or the balls are too warm. Let your chocolate sit for about 5 minutes, while your balls chill again in the fridge or freezer.
  • If using sprinkles or Oreo crumbles as topping, sprinkle them on immediately after dipping. The outside hardens quickly and sometimes the sprinkles will not stick otherwise.
  • If your chocolate is hardening before you're done, pop it in the microwave for about 20 seconds to warm it back up. Work quickly to avoid reheating.
  • Don't allow moisture to come into contact with the melted chocolate. This will cause it to seize or irreparably harden. You will have to toss it and begin again.

Ingredients

  • 1 package (14 ounces) Oreo cookies (original)
  • 8 ounces cream cheese softened
  • 12 ounces chocolate for dipping (milk, white, semi-sweet, or dark chocolate)
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil or shortening
  • 6 ounces white chocolate for decorating and drizzling (or other favorite chocolate)

Instructions

Prepare the Truffles

  • Line a baking sheet with wax paper. Set aside.

  • Place the Oreos in a food processor and blend until they form fine crumbs

  • Add the cream cheese and process again to form a sticky dough.

  • Roll into 1-inch balls, and set aside onto prepared baking sheet. Freeze for 30 minutes.

Dip in Chocolate

  • Place the 12-ounces of chocolate in a medium microwave-safe bowl with vegetable oil. Microwave for 45 seconds. Stir. Then microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each increments, until chocolate is melted and smooth.

  • Remove Oreo balls from the freezer. Gently drop them into the melted chocolate, one at a time, turning to coat. Lift the truffle out of the chocolate with a fork and slide the bottom of the fork along the top of the bowl to allow excess chocolate to drip off. Then set it on the wax paper.

  • Repeat for remaining truffles.

  • Once all truffles have been coated, refrigerate for at least 10 minutes to set.

Decorate

  • Place remaining chocolate (preferably of a contrasting color) in a small microwave bowl. Microwave for 45 seconds. Stir. Then microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each increments, until chocolate is melted and smooth.

  • Dip a fork into the melted chocolate and drizzle it over the Oreo balls. Let set before serving.

Notes

  • Chocolate: You can use any type of chocolate including white, milk, semi-sweet, or dark.
  • Oreo: Use your favorite Oreo flavor as long as it's the classic filled, and not double stuffed (or more! 🙈). Too much filling can alter the texture and make the Oreo balls fall apart.
  • Storage: Store covered in the refrigerator for up to a week.
  • Make Ahead: The shaped balls can be chilled in the refrigerator for up to 3 days before coating with chocolate.
  • Freezer: You can freeze uncoated or finished Oreo truffles for up to 2 to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the refrigerator.
