Summer has begun in earnest, and the Max streaming service aims to keep its subscribers indoors with a variety of great arrivals in June 2024. The biggest Max premiere in June 2024 is undoubtedly House of the Dragon Season 2. The HBO original series, which is a prequel set centuries before the events of Game of Thrones, will kick off its latest season on June 16, 2024. Based on George R.R. Martin’s novel Fire & Blood, House of the Dragon will be one of HBO and Max’s hottest attractions for the next few months as it rolls out new episodes on a weekly basis. Fans will be left on the edge of their seats as the relationship between Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) and her uncle/husband Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) evolves in unexpected ways, all the while her rivalry with former friend Alicent Hightower (Olivia Cooke) grows.
Although the co-showrunner of House of the Dragon Season 1, Miguel Sapochnik, has ceded duties over to partner Ryan Condal, it seems like this HBO show is aspiring to capture more of the same magic from the first season — akin to the heydays of the original Game of Thrones. Moving on to what else is coming to Max in June 2024, a more niche HBO original series that will certainly find its audience on the streaming platform is Julio Torres’ Fantasmas. The acclaimed, young avant-garde filmmaker centers his latest comedy series around a fictionalized version of himself. Fantasmas follows Julio encountering a variety of celebrities and situations as he traverses New York to find a golden oyster earring. For fans of Torres’ previous eccentric works, HBO’s Los Espookys and A24’s Problemista, Fantasmas seems like a mandatory viewing on Max when the streaming series arrives on June 7, 2024.
Speaking of Problemista, Max is getting a double dose of Julio Torres as that movie is also about to make its streaming debut in June 2024. The critically acclaimed A24 film, written, directed by, and starring Torres, follows a Salvadorian immigrant named Alejandro (Torres) who aspires to be a toymaker in New York City. When he is forced to be an assistant to the chaotic, domineering artist Elizabeth (Tilda Swinton) in order to secure a sponsor for his work visa, the two discover that they have much more in common than meets the eye. Problemista offers viewers a quirky, heartfelt introduction to what filmmaker Julio Torress is all about. Like most A24 films before it, Problemista is bound to have a wonderful second life on the streaming giant when it becomes available to stream on June 28, 2024.
For HBO original films, Max has a couple of heavy hitters arriving in June 2024. The biggest of which is comedian Tig Notaro and Stephanie Allyne’s Am I OK? The streamer’s latest original movie revolves around Lucy (Dakota Johnson), a woman who realizes she’s a lesbian and starts to navigate the landscape of coming out and dating women while in her 30s. But she doesn’t have to do this alone, as she’s helped by her best friend (Sonoya Mizuno). Debuting at the 2022 Sundance Film Festival, Am I OK? holds a 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics lauding it for its authenticity. Considering how well Madame Web did on Netflix, Warner Bros. is smart to bet big on actor Dakota Johnson with its own streaming service. Am I Ok? makes its streaming premiere on Max on June 6, 2024.
The Swifties will get their due on Max, as well, with the release of Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun: Bad Blood on June 21, 2024. The Discovery+ UK two-part miniseries will go into detail about the legal battle between Taylor Swift and music producer Scooter Braun, who purchased the masters for her first six albums. Of course, this led to Swift rerecording her own versions of those albums, a project that is still in progress with Taylor’s versions of “Reputation” and her self-titled record being the only two left. Max’s release of this docuseries may not be as celebratory as something like Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour hitting theaters, but it’ll be a fascinating watch for the devoted fans of the singer or simply those interested in litigation around pop music.
Max subscribers still have plenty of old favorites to look forward to in June 2024. The Safdie Brothers’ Uncut Gems starring Adam Sandler, which has become something of a modern classic, just got added to Max this June. The cult favorite Wanted, starring James McAvoy and Angelina Jolie, and based on Mark Millar’s comic series of the same name, is now available to stream on Max as well. Director Ang Lee’s seminal martial arts film Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon is another must-see masterpiece that should not be missed on this streamer. More notable Max additions include Pedro Almodóvar’s The Skin I Live In and Lee Isaac Chung’s Minari. People looking forward to the upcoming summer blockbuster Twisters should make an effort to stream Lee Isaac Chung’s previous movie, Minari, as it perfectly demonstrates his personal touch and sensibilities as a filmmaker.
Finally, moviegoers excited for writer-director Fede Álvarez’s Alien: Romulus, which hits theaters this August, will definitely want to stream his 2013 Evil Dead remake now that it just got added to Max as it fully displays his sick and twisted taste for horror.
